Payback is a...

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, (R-Saks) used a day of his two-week break from his congressional duties in Washington, D.C. to drop in on a few of his constituents at Auburn University Montgomery.

AUM and the main campus of Auburn University are both in congressional District 3, which Rogers represents.

Rogers talked a bit about the economy, the war and homeland security. But some of the most interesting comments he had to make (at least in this reporter's humble opinion) were about how Congressional Democrats were wielding their new majority in Congress.

Despite President Barack Obama's commitment to bipartisanship, Rogers says Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi (whom he described as "crazy," "mean as a snake" and "Tom DeLay in a skirt") and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't get that memo.

"They don't talk to us," he said. "They've got the vote, and they can do what they want."

Rogers said to be fair Democrats are paying Republicans back for how they were treated when the Republicans controlled Congress.

"Republican leaders didn't talk to the Democrats," he said. "The attitude was 'We have the votes on our side, let the Democrats whine.'"

Rogers said that's a culture that needs to change if Congress wants to get more done in between election cycles.

"At some point we've got to recognize that the power goes back and forth," he said. "One side only has it for a finite time and we've got to work together while the minority is still sensitive because that's going to be us one day."

Update: Party chairman offers to bring Pelosi, Rogers together if he apologizes: http://southunionstreet.blogspot.com/2009/04/chairman-makes-offer-to-bring-pelosi.html

It's hard to know whether he's expressing admiration (what one would expect from a republican talking about ruthlessness) or just crying because he's being treated "unfairly". Since I don't remember him complaining when Delay was in there, I assume it's just sour grapes now.

I'll certainly agree that the two parties need to reach across the aisle more often and be more open to ideas from the other side. But considering the full-throated, non-stop hatefest and vicious attacks that have been perpetrated on all things even remotely liberal by angry conservatives for the better part of three decades now, nobody should blame any Democrat for not exactly feeling like making nice. Think about it: If a group of your co-workers constantly bombarded you with angry words and mean-spirited behavior and went to the boss and complained their fool heads off about you every time you turned around, would *you* feel all warm and fuzzy toward them?

There was always an understanding even among Republicans that Tom DeLay was no great political philosopher but was a take no prisoners political animal. Rahm Emanuel was the Democrats' version of DeLay, although smarter and even more ruthless. (DeLay actually used carrots more than sticks; Rahm? Not so much.) They're guys you find useful to have on your side, even if you don't like them that much. With Rahm gone, Nancy Pelosi is now ruling with an iron hand; she has power DeLay never had, and she's wielding it ruthlessly. Rahm, for all his faults, was at least a bit of a cautious moderating influence. With him out of the House, Pelosi is free to be the unrepentant liberal she was before becoming Speaker.

Obama puts on the nice face, articulate and using seemingly reasonable words to disguise the reality. Pelosi is not bright enough to be successfully duplicitous. But at the level of policy there is not a dime's worth of difference between them. Both are absolutely driven to expand the state into every aspect of life, to drive a secular progressive agenda down the throats of America, to take control of capital allocation via the banks, to control the legislative balance of power via a crooked Census, to take control of the healthcare industry (15% of the economy) and make it as reliably dependent on and Democratic in voting as the teacher union and the postal worker slaves.

Pelosi LOOKS crazy when she speaks on TV. She has a panoply of neurotic facial twitches that belie her faltering grip on reality, and more importantly, she often mistates simple facts and displays large swaths of ignorance about the subjects she discusses.

If she doesn't talk about specifics, she passes for "indifferent", but when she wades into world economics or even national security, hold onto your hat!

Surely there's something to be done about a crazy person, acting as Speaker of the US House Of Representatives??

I think the difference between Pelosi and DeLay is that she's a combination of crazy and evil. Moreover, she hates the best things about America. DeLay fought hard in the spirit of LBJ, Pelosi takes her cues from Lenin, Castro, and Chavez. Furthermore, DeLay was never Speaker of the House, he was the whip. Hastert and Frist were the heads of the House and senate. As the whip, DeLay was the community organizer in the house for the republicans. Don't forget, when the Republicans were ignoring the dems, it's because the dems were trying to orchestrate defeat in Iraq. When the dems ignore republicans, it's because the republicans are trying to save us from hyperinflation and oppressive taxes. There's a big difference.

Here we have a member of Congress who is calling the Speaker of the House a "snake," and "crazy," and nobody seems to think there's anything wrong with that. Instead, we have a bunch of other people writing in to try to say things that are even more outrageous. Listen, people, you're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem. If you disagree with somebody, whether it's the President, the Speaker, Rahm Emanuel or Tom Delay, then say so. But this wild-eyed use of invective and name-calling does not do anything to help anything. It's totally destructive of any kind of civilized government. And whether you think this is true or not, you need civilized government. The alternative is either anarchy or a genuine dictatorship (not the kind of pseudo-dictatorship, "oh, that scary Obama is coming for your guns" kind of thinking that just got three police officers killed in Pittsburgh for doing their jobs. What is wrong with you? Why don't you grow up?

Problem with the so called Pay Back time, if and when the Repubs get back Congress, is that the expensive and social bills passed will still be there. The bills passed by this Congress will be eating away at us for generations and have made changes to laws that, most likely won't be overturned. Illegal Immigration, Taxes, Health Care, you name it and once it is out their and people are dependent on it then it won't go away. Obama, Nancy and Harry know this and why they are trying to rush through everything and make it law before the next elections in 2010.
Look at Social Security, Medicare, etc. Once it is pass and the poeple are on the pay roll, it is forever there no matter how bad the program turns out to be.

Here here! you said it. I know here in NJ one of the big radio stations in the state is always saying G.R.I.P. Get Rid of Incumbent Politicians, a great idea BUT dumocrats are the ones who vote blindly and MINDLESSLY just because the person is a democrat. Look to Chicago how many dead people have been elected to that dem capitol? This past election was lost by republican because they lost their way of the true conservative platform of the great Ronald Wilson Reagan no matter what the biased partisan left wing failing media tells you. If McLaim was a bit more conservative instead of "democratic light" he may have won the election. I know a lot of life long republicans who refused to vote for McLaim & either didn't vote or went to a 3rd party. And despite what the biased partisan left wing failing media told you that Palin lost the election for McLaim if you look at his numbers he was still up 13+% over his numbers before the selection of Palin! Another person who the same media also vilified was “Joe the Plumber” who did more for McLaim than any of the democratic lights on his campaign. One last rant does anyone find it interesting that osamabalama had harsher words for talk radio hosts, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and others than he has for N. Koreas launch of a missile of Iran’s continued march towards obtaining nukes?

As for Pelosi, once the press tells the truth about her part in this country's financial meltdown (from knowledge she had clear back in 2003), she is toast. Of course, the press will be too because they ahd the same information at their fingerprints.

Someone said elections are 'term limits'. Not any more, bunky. The incumbents have manipulated the system to the point they can hardly lose an election.

With an approval rating of 13%, almost NO member of Congress was tossed out on his ass.

There's something rotten in the state of Denmark.

Congressmen & Senators become "leaders-for-life" almost. They spend their entire careers in Congress, isolated from The People, not subject to the taxes, regulations, or the economic messes they create.

One Term each house. Lifetime Limit in Washington: 6 years.

Then they have to go home an get a real job and pay live with the laws they made. That will bring common sense back to government through SELF INTEREST.

They need to be reminded they ARE The People, not their permanent RULERS.

I'm still trying to figure out WHY it took all these people to realize Pelosi was nothing more then a typical power hungrey woman. The only reason she backed Obama was so Hillary would not spoil "her" power. She lacks nothing in the art of back-stabbing or arm-twisting, so what is the surprise? People who go to Congress and expect fairness, civility, respect, and to be able to have their voice heard are ignorant and know little of Washington. Here is what you need to remember...“The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.”-"Sam Adams"

"SNOPES" VALIDATES THE BELOW FACTS:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/pelosi/americansamoa.asp
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's home district includes San Francisco.(No surprise here!) Star-Kist Tuna's headquarters are in San Francisco , Pelosi's home district. Star- Kist is owned by Del Monte Foods and is a major contributor to Pelosi.(no surprise) Star-Kist is the major employer in American Samoa employing 75% of the Samoan work force.
NOW....pay attention....Paul Pelosi, Nancy 's husband, OWNS $17 MILLION DOLLARS OF STAR-KIST STOCK. In January, 2007 when the minimum wage was increased from $5.15 to $7.25, Pelosi had American Samoa exempted from the increase so Del Monte would not have to pay the higher wage! This would make Del Monte products less expensive than their competition's.
Last week when the huge bailout bill was passed, Pelosi added an earmark to the final bill adding $33 million dollars for an 'economic development credit in American Samoa!
Pelosi has called the Bush Administration
"CORRUPT"? REALLY?
How do you spell "HYPOCRISY?”

For either side to claim that they represent the people is a total joke considering their lack of attachment to the real issues. As hundreds of thousands of Americans lose their jobs these politicians have the nerve to trumpet millions of dollars of wasteful spending of our money and on top of it they vote for a raise for themselves. Last time I checked they were talking about corporations paying for performance. I guess that doesn't apply to the idiots we've had running Washington. Nancy Pelosi represents all that is wrong with our politicians. She has gtrown richer off her job, done very little to make her constituents lives better, funneled money into her husbands private accounts and as speaker of the house she takes ZERO responsibility for any of the problems that happened during her watch. Also, I read somewhere down the line a good point: these parties have been around for about 150 years. It's a funny thing, us Americans and our democracy. The truth is we have something more a kin to an Oligopoly [sorry, i'm an economist]. Sure, you vote, but it's always for the lesser of the two evils. The parties decide who is going to be in power. Did you really think for a moment you did. There is a concentrated amount of power in very few hands, like Pelosi. They make the rules. We can republicans suck, or democrats such, but that ususally means that you support the other; that sucks too. What do i know, i'm only 28. Nancy is a THUG from Baltimore. She is the original "Pay to Play"

Julie Hirschfeld Davis has a nice portrait of some of Nancy's Pelosi's background in the Baltimore Sun. Her father Thomas D'Alessandro, Jr. was a legendary Baltimore mayor and Congressman, and more importantly, head of a political machine. It turns out her mother may be even a more formidable figure in her background.

...her mother, Annunciata, a statuesque woman also known as Nancy, who juggled six children with serving as precinct captain, strategist and all—around enforcer in her husband's storied Democratic machine. And people knew not to tangle with her.

"Cross [my mother]? You're dead in the water. She'd get you," said Pelosi's brother, Thomas J. D'Alesandro III. "With my mother, there was no forgiving."

It's a trait that sounds familiar to Pelosi's colleagues on Capitol Hill, where she climbed to the top echelons by blending savvy, determination and impeccable organization with prolific fundraising — and a hefty dose of her mother's take—no—prisoners approach.

Pelosi's "toughness comes from her," said D'Alesandro, who served four years as mayor of Baltimore, following in the footsteps of his father, a former mayor and congressman who came to be known as Tommy the Elder.

I hope the nation is spared the process of getting to know Nancy Pelosi's leadership style as Speaker. I can only add that although San Francisco politics are not exactly the same as old East Coast style political machines, don't let the leftist baggage obscure the underlying reality that in SF politics ain't beanbag, either. The lady knows how to fight.

And those ticked of at republicans and rushed to vote democrats in; you kicked out the jackels to let the demons in.

What a weak and impotent leader Pres Obama looks like on the world stage. As for congress; I would consider them to be facists rather than socialists. It's time to take this country back from the pols. They are suppose to work for us; not the other way around. Does anyone realize that congress created the financial crisis. The relaxation of the "Glass-Steagle" act perpetrated by a Rep congress and a Dem pres. The "Mark to market" rule, Fannie and Freddie and lets not forget Oxley-Sarbanes. All of this was done by congress and look what we have now. Now they tell us they're going to fix it??? Thomas Jefferson once said that (I'm paraphrasing) a revolution is good now and then. I believe it's time for a "Peacefull" revolution. Throw all those bums out. I know there are some good Americans out there that can do a better job than what we've been getting all these years.

Yes, that was the "No Child Left Behind" Act. Funny how Bush is called partisan and gets ALL blame for any failings of NCLB when he basically let Kennedy write the bill and gave him full control over the contents.

However, nobody seems to remember that when criticism comes... as usual, everything is Bush's fault.

You're 100% right.
Here's some Rasmussen poll results of Obama voters:

1. 57.4 could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)

2. 81.8 could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)

3. 82.6 could NOT correctly say that Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)

4. 88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)

5. 56.1 % could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing). And yet…..

6. Only 13.7% failed to identify Palin as the person their party spent $150,000 in clothes on

7. Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter

8. And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her “house,” even though that was Tina Fey who said that, and Palin never did.

Even people I work with repeat this one (#8) all of the time. I've given up correcting them.

Not including the other party in House discussions is a grand tradition that goes way back. Folks we do have term limits. It is called an election. If we need Term Limits to protect us from ourselves, Lord help us. Vote them out folks. Vote them out.

April 7, 2009 8:09 AM

Term limits protect us from them. Both parties go about gerrymandering the voting blocks so that they cannot represent the constituency but only the respective party. This essentially subverts the vote. Congress placed term limits on the Presidency & I agree with that, but in doing so they upset the Check & Balance system. Either by design or lack of forthought, Congress increased its's power. Term limits will remove the congress people who sit as chairs of committes for long periods of time and vote along their respective party lines without actually listening to the people. Term limits will not happen unless it is forced upon them. "We the People" have already asked/demanded term limits & Congress said "Yeah we hear you, but we are not going to do that". They do not want to give up the power they assumed. Congress (both parties) believe "We the People" are idiots to be played. Nothing but the idiot serfs that are there to service there whims. Let me leave you with a few words from our forefathers;

"A free people [claim] their rights as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate." --Thomas Jefferson: Rights of British America, 1774

"The habits of thinking in a free country should inspire caution in those entrusted with its administration to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another. The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism." George Washington, farewell address

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." Samuel Adams 1776

And to the person who referred to Tom DeLay as a thoughtful and respectful person, one word of advice. Stop smoking crack, it really is quite addictive.

Or else do a little light reading on the Jack Abramhoff scandal.

When Americans decide to "Not vote for the incumbant," Republicans lose elections. Democrats ALWAYS support the Democrat, even if he is a KKK grand wizard (Byrd), a murderer (Ted Kennedy), running a mal prostitution ring (Robert Franks), or an outright lunatic (take your pick, their are dozens).

It's time people learn a lesson. This isn't about term limits, this is about the need for real revolution, where we follow the Second Ammendment, sweep the political class from power, and establish a new government that respects the Constitution of the United States. This will not happen until blood is shed.

It is very true, that the witch of the west, Pelosi is the major cause of the turmoil in Congress Many Americans have forgotten, that the last two years plus of George Bush's Presidency was dominated by the Democratic Congress, the 110th and now the 111th Congressional Session and they worked tirelessly to make Bush look like a fool and deny him the things he need to run the country. Many people think, the President calls the shots, it is not true, the Congress, which has been in the hands of Democrats for going on 3 years now, were responsible for oversight over all banking, Fannie Mae, AIG, etc., and did absolutely nothing to rein it in. They were too intent on investigating steroids in baseball and trying to impeach Bush, when they should of had been focused on the problems, that they ignored, because, of the kick-backs they were getting from AIG, Fannie Mae, etc. Remember, Obama received more than $312,000 from Fannie Mae to prevent the Republicans from pushing the Dems as chairmen over banking and the mortgage industry from doing their jobs. Then because of their desire to enrich theirselves personally, they ignored their responsibilities, i.e., Barney Frank, over banking, and Chris Dodd enriching himself with a gift from Countrywide Mortgage, that no American could ever get. Then you have the witch of the west, who blows off every Republican idea and she only allows Democratic bills to be introduced onto the floor, as does dirty Harry in the Senate. Over the past several years, since the Dems controlled Congress, that is when the economy was destroyed because of their, Dems, failure to do their jobs of oversight and tried to lay the blame on Bush, when he did not control oversight or appropriations, per our Constitution, nor does he write laws, the is the responsibility of the Legislative Branch, which was controlled by the witch of the west, Pelosi and Dirty Harry!

The US Congress nor the Presidents of the last 30 years are only a symptom of the real underlying problem we face in this country. It really does not matter what the party affiliation is because the vast majority of the electorate is uninformed and easily swayed by what they see and hear in the media. We have not seen a statesman in a leadership position in either the executive or legislative branch of the Federal Government since 1988 and prior to that since 1963. Until the people of this country wake up and unplug themselves from the TV and Blogs where everything is OPINION and very little is fact we will continue to have a hyper partisan payback based pandering government. Maybe the next generation, after suffering hardships not seen in the USA since pre WWII, will lose the entitlement mentality that has permeated this country since the baby boomers became adults. We are in for a long hard road and at 38 years old I can only hope that our children will find the moral fortitude to take this Republic back.
