Payback is a...

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, (R-Saks) used a day of his two-week break from his congressional duties in Washington, D.C. to drop in on a few of his constituents at Auburn University Montgomery.

AUM and the main campus of Auburn University are both in congressional District 3, which Rogers represents.

Rogers talked a bit about the economy, the war and homeland security. But some of the most interesting comments he had to make (at least in this reporter's humble opinion) were about how Congressional Democrats were wielding their new majority in Congress.

Despite President Barack Obama's commitment to bipartisanship, Rogers says Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi (whom he described as "crazy," "mean as a snake" and "Tom DeLay in a skirt") and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't get that memo.

"They don't talk to us," he said. "They've got the vote, and they can do what they want."

Rogers said to be fair Democrats are paying Republicans back for how they were treated when the Republicans controlled Congress.

"Republican leaders didn't talk to the Democrats," he said. "The attitude was 'We have the votes on our side, let the Democrats whine.'"

Rogers said that's a culture that needs to change if Congress wants to get more done in between election cycles.

"At some point we've got to recognize that the power goes back and forth," he said. "One side only has it for a finite time and we've got to work together while the minority is still sensitive because that's going to be us one day."

Update: Party chairman offers to bring Pelosi, Rogers together if he apologizes: http://southunionstreet.blogspot.com/2009/04/chairman-makes-offer-to-bring-pelosi.html

Dems flummoxed the country by campaigning on the moral high ground, but immediately sank back down into the "business as unusual" political ooze and muck after winning.

I don't think they can ever reach across the aisle. It's like asking the Palestinians and the Israelis to reach across the aisle when the Palestinians want to annihilate the Jews. Liberals and conservatives cannot agree because their fundamental beliefs are diametrically opposed: Conservatives value the life of an unborn child, liberals don't - but they are concerned about taking away parental rights. Conservatives want small government; liberals like big parental type government. Conservatives want people to take responsibility for their lives and work; liberals want the government to take care of them. Conservatives want to allow capitalism to drive the economy; liberals want socialism/fascism to. Conservatives want Americans to have the freedom to work and earn their own living; liberals want the government to control all aspects of life. Conservatives want the constitution to be followed; liberals want to change it so that they can control what people say and think. Conservatives want less taxes so that business will grow resulting in more jobs; liberals want more taxes so no one can get ahead and so the rich will pay those who don't want to work.
With these kinds of differences, we are heading towards another civil war, not reaching across the aisle.

If the American don't wake up and vote these "cry baby" incumbants out and bring in people who realize their job is to represent their constituents and not constantly campaign for their reelection, things will never change. One answer that should be put into law is term as well as age limits. But since they make and vote on the bills in both houses, this will probably NEVER happen. Unfortunately.
What happened to the Campaign promise of bipartizaship???

The problem with Pelosi and Obama is that they are still beholden to the same corporate powers as the GOP. Many of us voted them in to take the nation in a progressive direction. But they insist on bailing out Wall Street and escalating war. Perhaps they will make good on global warming, universal health care and nuclear weapons reduction. As it stands, I can understand why people are upset with Pelosi's strange flirtation with right wing politics.

Why is it that I (registered Republican) can see that the Delay style of politics did not produce good results for our party or the country in the last years, but most of the people who support the current administration and party in power cannot seem to admit that the Pelosi/ Reid led legislature is also not only not producing good results for the country but making the Democratic party look petty and vindictive. I wonder how we will act if our Congressional approval ratings sink to zero. Will the people vote them out? And by the way who are they polling to get these approval ratings? Apparently whomever they poll do not vote or we would have seen some significant changes in the last cycle.

This is not the same church I was brought up in starting in 1936. They have sold out to the younger hippie generation and even though they condemn abortion they readily accept people like the aforementioned completely worthless people as celebrities.

Pelosi needs to be put out to Botox land somewhere where she can do no more damage to us, and can keep that face stretched tight. Harry Reid needs to discover what a jail cell looks like from the inside, with all the illegal land deals he's been involved in, in Nevada.
Oh and a final thought, lawyers and attorneys will be banned from making laws, since that is a blatant conflict of interest, and not having them there would simplify our livs astronomically.

What they do is use our work effort as an ATM and even make us grovel for jobs with their open border policy which Obama apparently is willing to crank up even more.

Until Americans set up the same howl towards these dirty dealing politicians as they did the greedy bankers, we can expect further erosion of law and order and the meaning of citizenship having even less value. Just enter the country illegally and Obama will not only embrace you but will heap rewards on you. They are both guilty of treason.
Clean them all out (except Ron Paul) and save this great nation.

You have it right, Mike. Politics is about winning, because only the winner gets to decide who distributes a country's resources. "Bi-partisanship" is important during wartime only (our current escapades in the Middle East aren't the kinds of wars I'm referring to here), and we rarely experince it even then. Every country has to play with Socialism every generation or so. Let the "progressives" own whatever happens over the next year, then run on cleaning up the reeking piles they'll leave behind.

There's nothing even remotely "liberal" about today's Democrat Party. It's full-on leftist and heading toward fascism at breakneck speed. And if you say fascism is of the right, you've never studied Mussolini's fascism or the National Socialist German Worker's Party. But don't worry--you're on the path to seeing a modern example in action unless we change course quickly.

Unfortunately, It's not happening. There is zero debate occuring on any of these bills. So while Obama is commandeering private businesses, holding banks hostage with TARP funds, enpowering labor unions to a ridiculous degree, slashing important aspects of national defenese, nationalizing healthcare, and setting the stage for massive inflation with social spending the nation cannot afford.

All this, mind you, while the average nitwit is only concerned with what Michelle is wearing today, or if they have an effing dog in the White house yet.

Nancy is as mean as a snake. And she's a greedy one to boot!

She's just not very bright.

The woman didn't even know that natural gas was a fossile fuel!

And she proved that last August on national TV.

"I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels," she said on NBC's Meet the Press, adding that natural gas "is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels."

The trouble is that natural gas IS a fossile fuel.

At the time she and her husband were heavily invested monitarily in T. Boone Pickins plan for increasing the use of natural gas, so you'd think someone would have explained to her what it was all about.

Maybe someone did and it just didn't sink in. Perhaps she was blinded by all the dollar signs she had in her eyes, thinking about how much she and her husband would make off their investments, and how eager she was to convince everyone she could that they should use more natural gas!

Like our forefathers we believe in small government, stronger state government, defense of the nation the central government's main job, freedom of speech and low taxes. Do you realize we pay excess of 30% to the government? There's cameras on every corner....Your car has gps, your phone has gps, your credit card and debit card leaves nothing to the imagination as to what you do or where you go. Democrats today are classic european conservatives that believe in an all powerful government and all responsibility lies on it's leader/king/zsar. Our farthers did not believe in a crippling welfare state, taxes that crippled economies or pacifism.

And I guess Ms. Nancy runs her campaigns on carbon credits and does not receive campaign contributions from rich people and so therfore would have no need to work for them. By the way genius all citizens of this country deserve to have someone in congress working for their interests and guess what... even wealthy people are citizens. Just because one has attained some level of financial success that does not make them deserving of punishment or less deserving of representation. How can we bomb another country to help them become more of a democracy and we cannot even hold a fair election without the legal controversies?

Soon we'll have the government telling us what healthcare we can and can't have and who we can get it from.

Sounds like fascism to me.

Main Entry: fas·cism
1: often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

The only answer to this quagmire of back and forth is to elect either more independents or additional parties. The party system seems to be the only effective way to focus support behind a candidate. Everybody else (independents) get little support, because the ability to build an oganization in all the states is limited. The main failing of third parties is in that they always seem ti go for the top job -- President. If a third party is going to get traction they are going to have to get into city councils and state legislatures, and then congress. Without a consistent message and a track record to go by people are shy about voting third party, it's as though the candidate is actually independent without a clear party track record to go by.

They contribute to social security just like anyone else, and recieve the same benifit as everyone else. They run and work for the people as servants of the people not the other way around. See if they don't start fixing some problems.

Sometimes when operating a country of 300,000,000 people deficit spending is required. Job growth is what provides the revenue to reduce deficits. Increased taxes historically do not generate near the revenues of increased job growth. They do however limit job growth. You see it all works together for good as well as bad it all depends on how it is applied.

"The only reason for a Republican Party, is to cut the taxes of the very wealthy."

That's exactly correct. As long as there is still some sliver of the pie that the rich don't control, they'll keep trying to steal more.

Sadly, it's the poor and uneducated -- those who get worked up about "socialism" because high-paid radio and TV personalities tell them what to think -- who are blind to this reality.

America needs a fundamental change in the voting proceedure for national office holders. Instead of winning by 50% plus one vote, the incumbent would need to win by 52% plus one vote, then 54% plus one vote, etc. This would put an end to the permanent incumbent advantage.

It's true. The Republicans didn't bulldoze there agenda through like the Democrats are. They were more concerned with bipartisonship and getting everyone on board. It was mistake. You cannot compromise with ratical democrats. They make no friends. They are opportunist who care not about America and the greater good, but about their own power. It is sad that it will be the reason our Republic will faulter.

What were we doing while they were supposed leading? They had us focus on tearing the hell out of each other over "party" while they destroyed us. Who is the real bunch of fools? That's because it WAS Bush's fault -- he and his cronies ran this country into the ground with a vanity war and irresponsible tax cuts for their rich patrons.

I wish people like you would learn how to think instead of just braying stupidities.

Dems (aka secular socialists) are never bipartisan unless they can bribe a few n-east mod Repubs...they re-wrote the rules for 2009! They made sure a STIM Bill of a trillion borrowed dollars was not even read! Now go tell us the Dems are just like Repubs or reasonable.
You know that is baloney. They now will ram thru a 3.6 trillion budget stuffed with pork and social engineering that triples the national debt. Enough. Liberals are like kids in a candy store...they cannot manage a hot dog stand. Its all about buying votes and creating dependency. Its sickening...and ya gonna pay and pay and pay. Jimmah Carter is back, enjoy the change...suckers.

despite all the back and forth, the point is: bipartisanship was a big promise and is now being completely ignored because the election has provided us with a hypocritical majority. it doesn't matter if the dems are just getting revenge on the repubs...their whole platform was bipartisanship and change from the usual way of doing things.

I think the larger and important point is that nothing has changed in the last twenty years. Different party in power, same net results. Everyone talks about being bipartisan but nobody follows through and we all suffer.

Forget political "payback." Payback eventually comes at election time. It's already set up for Democrat seats to be lost in 2010.
Most voters vote their "pocketbooks" and recent Dem/Obama budget and massive social engineering/bailout programs are destined to fail. Guess who will be blamed? Not the minority party!!!

No -- you're wrong. Did you even bother to read the article above? Even this Republican admitted as much.

The Democrats would be happy to work with the Republicans, but the Republicans have decided that being the party of obstructionism might pay off politically.

It won't. The adults are in charge now, and the Republicans are -- blessedly -- headed into the trash heap of history.

How Naive are these people. Obama's plan to distribute the wealth evenly was not to elevate the poor. His plan is to bring down the wealthy to the level of the poor. There "we're all even". Eveyone is poor - Happy? Only the Rich can create the industry and jobs that keep the country going and money flowing. Are they so dense as to not know this?

Incoherent and different opinions are not quite the same. But thanks anyway for your commentary which by the way further empasizes the fact that most libs really don't care about facts or truths only their agenda.

Turnabout may be fairplay, but the demonrats have never played fair. Keep in mind, before 1994, the house had been dem controlled for 40plus years. Repubs were shutout for the entire time, so yes, it was time for a little payback. But still, Gingrich extended an olive branch to the Dems by changing house rules that gave the minority party more say than ever before (having known what it was like to "shut out" all those years as Repubs).

Guess what?...Pelosi just recinded that rule, so the minority party once again is shut out completely.

Repubs need to learn how to never play nice with Dems, because they NEVER return the favor.

Most politicans are simple minded. They are uninformed. They are unsophisticated. They are small minded. They are petty. How many decades does it take for a politician to realize that power ebbs and flows? All they do is payback the opposition for being nasty to them. These are adults? These are children. That is what kids do. It is no wonder that we have the problems that we have.

Many of the comments here coming from child-like Democrat Socialists who hated Bush and enjoy having a Macy's shopping Bay Area Socialite Communist b_tch as House Speaker.
What an "O" bomination. Wonder what i's going to take to get people to violently overthrow this government? Everyone needs to declare 20 dependants on their W-4 and refuse to pay taxes at the end of the year. Only by closing the coffers to the Democrats will we heal the economy from further obliteration and force their recipient mentality base to go get jobs.

I have a couple of thoughts...

bad money drives out good money ... bad people drive out good people.

When God want to bless you, He gives you what you want. When God wants to punish you He gives you over to what you want.

Narcissism leads to Nazism. Actually, I believe narcissism is the foundation of Nazism - when enough people in the country become narcissistic the country just ends up being Nazis - no matter if it is Democrat or Republican.

America now is like Germany in the 20's which led to Germany in the 30's and 40's - and its utter destruction. If Obama-Pelosi-Emmanuel aren't the beginning in Nazism in America who ever comes next - Republican or Democrat - will probably be and it will lead to our utter destruction.

Talk about stupid. This wasn't Bush's fault. Dodd and Frank and other crooks in congress caused this mess with over-regulation and the stupid idea that everyone should own their own house even if they couldn't afford one. I'm sorry you are stuck in a Capitalist country, but you can leave anytime you'd like. THINK? I do think, that is why I cringe when democrats speak.
