Senate passes budget
The Alabama Senate passed the $1.5 billion General Fund budget 29-3 at 10 p.m. Tuesday, 12 hours after senators started business at the State House.
Republicans stalled throughout much of the day and had the bill read in its entirety, which took more than four hours.
Sen. Roger Bedford, chairman of the Senate General Fund committee, said the bill spends $597,764 more than the version the House passed. The House passed a different version so the House must concur or the members from the two chambers must meet in a conference committee to work out the differences.
Bedford, D-Russellville, said the budget is balanced and fully funds the state's children's health insurance program.
The General Fund also has money for Medicaid, prisons, state troopers and other non-education functions of state government.
