Davis hires top team for governor's race

U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, announced vital additions to his 2010 campaign team who bring along national experience. He is running for governor.
Jessica Vanden Berg of Maverick Strategies, who managed the successful U.S. Senate campaign of Jim Webb in Virginia, has joined the campaign as a strategist and will become campaign manager later in the year. She has been a senior adviser to General Wes Clark since he ran for president and was involved in the election of North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue in 2008.
"I am excited that I have attracted one of the best operatives in the country to manage my campaign," Davis said in a statement. " ... Not only does she know how to win in the South, she is a seasoned veteran who knows how to handle high profile national races. Her experience will compliment my Alabama team."
Her firm, Maverick Strategies, will handle all of the campaign’s direct mail and has worked on the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
The gubernatorial candidate also announced that PJ McCann and Ami Copeland of New Partners Inc. have joined his campaign as his national fundraising consultants.
McCann raised $20 million for operations in battleground states leading Barack Obama's Committee for Change. She was also a key adviser to Tom Perriello, who unseated a six-term incumbent in Virginia in 2008.
Copeland was deputy national finance director for Obama’s presidential campaign and senior finance adviser to the Democratic National Committee. Copeland participated in most aspects of the Obama for America Finance Department, which set national fundraising records. Copeland served as finance director for U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida during his successful reelection campaign in 2005-06.
“Ami and PJ are the best national fundraising consultants in America right now," Davis said in the statement. "They have the experience and national network it will take to raise millions for my 2010 campaign."
Other members of the Davis campaign include pollster John Anzalone of Anzalone-List Research and Ben Chao of Chao Strategy Message & Media, who will serve as the media consultant.
